56% Oppose Teaching Arabic Numbers

In my immigration and refugees work, I sometimes discover some interesting statistics. According to a recent poll, 56% of Americans do not want our youth being taught Arabic numerals. A problem: the numbers we use now are Arabic, instead of Roman or any other kind of numbers.


Do you think this poll reveals ignorance or bigotry or both?


I am reminded of a poll of the Louisiana Legislature during the Civil Rights Era when a number of legislators did not recognize the United States Constitution and thought it was a Communist publication of some kind.
