Excellence v. Relevance

As we work on a new mission statement, First Lutheran will need to determine its core values. One important decision is whether the congregation will put a greater value on excellence or on relevance.


Kodak is a good example of the difference. Kodak produced products that were excellent. However, the market shifted, Kodak products became irrelevant, and Kodak went bankrupt.


The same can happen to a congregation. A congregation may be so concerned about being excellent, it loses relevance.
