July 3: St. Thomas, Feast

Today is the festival for St. Thomas. Some of you may remember this feast day used to be on December 21. But because it was usually ignored because of its proximity to Christmas, Lutherans joined Catholics in agreeing on July 3 as the day to remember Thomas.

Just as the day of St. Monica near Mother's Day is used to present a Christian mother in the shadows of our secular celebration, St. Thomas is being used to present a spiritual emphasis just before the Fourth of July.

When Portuguese missionaries arrived in South India to evangelize, they found a group of St. Thomas Christians who claimed Thomas had established a church there many centuries before.
