Premarital Counseling

I have not had any couples, heterosexual or homosexual, ask me to perform their wedding service since coming to Edinburg and I may never be asked. But if I am, I want you to know how I handle premarital counseling.

Some years ago, a study in Kansas and Michigan found that in couples that divorce, 70% of the causes for the divorce already existed on the day of the wedding. Couples were often blind to approaching trouble.

To reduce the divorce rate, several states including Texas started offering discounts on marriage licenses for those couples who did prescribed pre-marriage counseling to address these preexisting relationship issues. Some work is done online and a local therapist then meets with the couple to discuss what the online work discovered. The goal is to reduce the divorce rate.

If I am asked to conduct a wedding here, I plan to continue this approach.
